Water softeners are becoming very popular these days, the reason being is the price has come down to what they use to cost. Water softeners will make your water fill nice to touch on the skin and also you will use less soap when washing. Scale build up on your taps and shower head, kettles will become a thing of the past.

Installing a water softener into your property you will also save on your detergents for the dishwasher and washing machine, and you will find your appliances will last a lot longer. Limescale buildup destroys metals and as such the washing machines lifespan is cut, the same with the dishwasher and any appliance that uses water.
There are many types of water softeners on the market to choose from, some that needs wiring and some totally wire free. Whatever size your property may be there are water softeners to meet your needs.
Installing water softeners is quite an easy job. All you need is to locate your incoming water supply, this is where you connect in the water softeners, you also need a drain close by, when the water softener is regenerating it discharges water. If installing water softeners that are electric,then you will need a power supply.
The first part in installing water softeners is to decide where you are going to place the unit, once you have the location you are now ready to connect up to the water. Locate the isolation valve on the incoming supply, and switch off. Now we need to cut the pipe, once cut fit a non return valve on the isolation valve side, this is to stop back flow of salty water. Now you may need to run a new supply to your drinking water taps. It’s normally close by. The reason you have to do this is you don’t want to be drinking salty water, it’s not very good for you.
Now we have the water supply isolated, the non return valve fitted and the drinking water supply done, we are now ready to fit the pipe work for the water softeners. Just after the non return valve you need to connect in a tee pipe, the middle part of the tee is where you will connect in the softener, (This is the incoming water), now on the other side of the tee you need to fit an isolation valve, from the isolation valve you need a small piece of pipe then another tee, that connects back into the water supply.
The centre part of the tees needs to be valved off. Once the valves are all connected you can now switch the water supply back on. Just make sure the valves on the centre part of the tees are switched off.
Now the main part of the plumbing is done you can get ready to connect your water softeners to the supply. Make sure you read all the instructions that came with the water softener. This is very important, because if you install your softener different to the instructions supplied, should you need to call the makers under the warranty, they may refuse to repair. This is how most makers get out of warranty claims. So double-check you install according to the makers instructions.
The water softeners come with the hoses that connect to the water supply, now fit the first hose to the softener on the inlet side, check your instructions to find out the inlet side. Then connect this hose to the water on the non return valve side. Once connected you can now connect the outlet side. Don’t switch any valves on yet.
Now you need to connect into the drainage, again check the instructions that came with your water softeners. You may need a small hose something like garden hose to connect to the softener for the drainage, its needs to connect from the softener into the drain. You also have an overflow pipe from the softener, this can also be put into the drainage pipe if possible, if not then you will need to make sure that should it discharge it does so safely, the overflow pipe os normally supplied with the softener.
You are now ready to put the water softeners into operation. Check the instruction on how to commission the softener. If the softener is of the electric type you need to connect to the power supply.
When you were connecting in the tees into the pipe you installed an isolation valve either side of the tees, this now needs to be switched of and the other two valves feeding the softener switched on.
The isolation valve in the middle is called a bypass, when servicing the softener you can open the bypass and still have water. Once the service has been carried out, the bypass is closed and the valves feeding the softener opened.
It may sound a little daunting installing water softeners, but it’s not as bad as it sounds.
