Special report: Gas Safe Register outlines its plans for 2014
Russell Kramer, chief executive of Gas Safe Register, looks at the organisation’s plans for 2014.
2013 was another busy year for Gas Safe Register as we investigated around 700 illegal gas jobs and inspected gas work in approximately 27,000 homes nationwide. However, one of the biggest achievements of the year was the launch of the first ever online gas map and the free annual gas safety check reminder service at www.staygassafe.co.uk.
The reminder service was introduced after our own research found that while people know they should get their appliances safety checked every year, not enough were then acting on this information. The reminder service aims to combat this by sending an email to people who sign up telling them when their appliances are due for their annual check.
Of course, while the primary aim of the reminder service is to ensure more people are kept safe, we also recognise that one of the other results is that it could generate more trade for registered engineers. As the more people who know to get their appliances checked and sign up to the service, the more people will turn to registered engineers to carry out those checks.
The reminder service was something we wanted to communicate far and wide last year and it was central to Gas Safety Week 2013. However, as we look to the year ahead, we want engineers to help us to drive sign ups to the service.
So this New Year, as people think about their resolutions, why not help us to reach the 23 million people who rely on gas and get your customers to sign up to the reminder service. Not only will you be doing your bit to keep people safe, you could also be helping secure more business for yourself.
Other than the reminder service, 2014 is already looking like it is going to be an exciting year for Gas Safe Register. We have confirmed dates for Gas Safety Week (15 to 21 September) and we have got a new bit of kit being launched soon to support our engineers. It’s still being finalised so we can’t say too much more about it now, but it should be a real help when you are out on the job.
Overall, I’m looking forward to another year where together we can look to keep Britain gas safe.
